Research shows about 3% of the US population suffers from excessive, uncontrollable worry that reduces the quality of their life. In addition, approximately 6.7% of the US population suffers from major depressive disorder. If you are diagnosed with anxiety or depression, you can benefit from ongoing counseling sessions with a licensed therapist. You may also need an evaluation for psychotropic medications. New research from a study at the University of Georgia found patients who exercised regularly reported a 20% reduction in anxiety symptoms compared to those who did not exercise. What are the benefits of exercise? * Improving physical condition * Fighting disease quicker/easier * Reduce stress * Reduce fatigue * Improve alertness and concentration, which enhances overall cognitive functioning * Produces endorphins, chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers * Improve ability to sleep * Decrease muscle tension * Elevate and stabilize mood * Improve self-esteem Exercise can be fun! Experiment with aerobic activity you enjoy – walking, running, team sports, weight lifting, dancing, yoga, kickboxing, elliptical machine, cross training, or many more wonderful options.
